Test your Smoke Detector

According to government statistics, in England between June 2020 and June 2021 the Fire and Rescue Service attended 149,779 house fires in England; of these, there were 249 fire-related fatalities.

Devon & Cornwall Fire Brigade recommend that you test your Smoke Detectors at least once a month. This way you will be ensuring that they are more likley to operate correctly in event that you need them, giving you valuable time to escape from a fire.

Dectector Types

Detectors generally come in two forms, battery operated or mains linked. The mains linked ones still have a battery back up but operate using power from the property (usually linked to the lighting circuit).

Some detectors are stand alone, others are linked together so if one goes off they all go off.

There are a variety of detectors available to suit, including Smoke, Heat and Co2.

How to Test

To test the alarm you will need to push and hold in the test button (usually in the middle), the alarm should sound after a second or two and you can release the button. The alarm will carry on for a short while and then stop. Repeat this process at each point.

If you have linked alarms, when you push the test button keep it held down a little longer until the other alarms activate and sound. This should only take 2-3 additional seconds. Again releasing the button will stop the test and after a short while the alarms will stop. Repeat this process at each point.

Should a device fail to operate then check the batteries or have someone qualified check it for you.
